Ready or Not—Console Changes Spark Review Bombing
Ready or Not, the SWAT simulation shooter, has long stood out for its extreme graphic violence—dismemberment, decapitation, and brutal melee takedowns. But ahead of its long-awaited console release, developer Void Interactive has made a series of small but controversial changes to the game’s most graphic elements, triggering a review-bombing campaign on Steam.
Changes for Console Certification
Player-induced dismemberment still appears frequently but is now more limited in when it can occur. Enemies can no longer be dismembered after they are dead, although the severity of the dismemberment itself remains unchanged. Some character art depicting torture has been toned down: the tortured police informant on Narcos still shows missing fingers, eyes, and fresh wounds, but the effects are less pronounced. Explicit nudity for a handful of civilians and one suspect has been reduced, and depictions of child mistreatment have been adjusted. In the Twisted Nerve map, the child character’s animation was changed from convulsing to sleeping to present the content more responsibly.
Developer Rationale and Reassurances
These modifications were made to satisfy the stricter content standards of Xbox and PlayStation ahead of Ready or Not’s console launch. Void Interactive stressed that the changes are minimal. “The changes with the console version are small enough that most people here wouldn’t notice if we didn’t say anything,” a developer blog post stated. The alterations largely affect evidence textures and nudity, do not impact the PC version, and were only made when flagged as absolutely required by first-party partners. The developers claim they aimed to remain faithful to the game’s original tonality.
