The humor felt forced, the villains were annoying, and the story just didn’t land. So when Borderlands 4 was announced, I was cautiously optimistic. Now that we’re in 2026 and the dust has settled, the reviews are in, and it looks like Gearbox might have actually pulled it off. The Consensus: A Big Step Up from Borderlands 3

If you’ve been living under a rock, here’s the scoop: Borderlands 4 is being praised as a course correction for the series. Our own review at Screen Rant boldly called it “the best game in the series so far.” IGN said it’s “the massive kick in the pants [the series] needed” after “fizzling somewhat with Borderlands 3.” That’s high praise, right? Even other outlets agree it’s a step in the right direction, even if it’s not perfect.

But here’s where it gets interesting. GameSpot noted that Borderlands 4 fixing its predecessor’s issues also works “to its detriment.” They said, “Borderlands 4 is cranked so far in the other direction that the resulting game feels like a strange imitation of the series.” Ouch. So, is it possible to overcorrect? Maybe. But from what I’ve seen, the core looter-shooter gameplay is still intact and satisfying, so I’m willing to forgive a little identity crisis.
